Forget Maryland! Pack your gear and head for charter fishing in Washington. No, not the coast either. If you want a chance at a real trophy, skip the coast, the forested mountains and the crystal clear lakes; instead, head over to eastern Washington.

The largest of Washington’s inland fish, the prehistoric-looking sturgeon with her long snout and waving fins, lurks as she has for centuries, between the banks of the Columbia and Snake Rivers. For fishing the best of both rivers, visit Tri-Cities, Washington, in the southeast corner of the state.

Chartering a boat

Several companies offer chartering services, not only for sturgeon but also for other fish that are in season, including salmon, bass, trout, walleye and catfish. If you are going for a trophy, the Columbia River sturgeon is hard to beat, and with a competent guide you do not have to wonder where to find them.

Places to stay

The area boasts plenty of lodging, ranging from the $55 basic room, up to a number of first class hotels. Of course, it is always wise to make reservations. On the other hand, if you prefer camping, the area has several campsites along the Snake River, and a few minutes to the west at Plymouth, Washington; some of which are first-come first-serve. You want to arrive midweek as the campgrounds fill up fast on the weekends, with many campers hunting for sites early on Thursday afternoons.

Weather information

Summers are hot, with temperatures ranging in the high 80s up to 100 degrees and occasionally soaring into the teens. On the other hand, Tri Cities is known to have sudden summer rainfalls, so bring light rain gear. Winters are cool, often well below freezing, but usually not extreme. Check with the weather service before you leave town.
