Charter Fishing Techniques

Chartering a fishing boat for deep-sea fishing can add excitement to a vacation near the sea. There is quite a challenge in doing battle with a monstrously strong, half-ton fish aboard a floating vessel miles from shore. This is definitely not for the feint of heart!

Selecting the vessel

When determining which boat to charter, you should first decide the type of fish to target. Large fish such as marlin, sailfish or shark require a boat capable of withstanding the tremendous pull these fighters exert. Equip the vessel with proper rods and lines--these are essential tools to help land the catch.

Choosing a captain

As essential as the vessel is the vessel's captain. A knowledgeable fishing charter captain can make or break a successful fishing trip. As a sport fisherman, you must partner with a captain whom you trust to find the best fishing spot and who has the experience and crew to help you reel in the prize.

Catching the fish

Techniques on baiting vary, depending upon the weather, the time of day and the targeted fish. Often, lines are baited at several different depths, giving the fisherman options for locating the prey. In other instances, bait is dropped deep to reach the larger fish that dwell there. Using multiple lines also helps the odds of a strike. Adding a certain degree of patience to the mix is a good idea as well.

An experience aboard a charter fishing boat is very rewarding. Hooking a huge tarpon or marlin and battling a creature of such size is quite a rush, but it pays to team up with an experienced captain and a capable fishing vessel to make the trip a success!
