What to Bring Charter Fishing

What to take on a charter fishing trip often depends on the type of fishing expedition. Serious anglers may choose to bring their own fishing rods, or specialized fishing rods. The amateur may prefer a more relaxed fishing experience, and in that case, choose to rent equipment provided by the charter company. Any angler might also include a cooler and some beers! So a large measure of what to bring charter fishing is up to you.
Where is your charter boat taking you?
Is deep ocean fishing a part of your plan? Or are you intent on the Great Lakes, a large bay or a wide river? The type of waters intended for your fishing trip change what equipment is needed. For example, charter fishing in the Gulf of Mexico might mean seasonal storms or even hurricanes. Dry bags and waterproof clothing is recommended.
What types of fish are on the list?
Are you hunting that huge trophy fish? Or are you seeking to stock up on salmon or bass? The type of fish you are seeking can alter the gear and rods needed for a successful charter experience. Large trophy fish require a sturdier rod and fishing line that take the weight of a large fish without snapping. Nothing is more disappointing than catching the fish of your dreams, only to have it thrash its way free and snap the line. Do not let that happen to you! Consult with your charter captain and crew to learn more about what types of fish to expect, and come prepared.
Some other useful tools include a pocket knife or utility tool, hat and sunscreen, gloves and boat shoes or sandals with serious grip. Make a check list, and mark it off before you leave for your trip.
